Sample Applications

  • Teacher Evaluator
A school system requested an application to allow principals to do in-classroom evaluations of teaching methods. The principals will be running in on iPod Touches and other mobile devices. To keep maximum flexibility and to avoid data synchronization issues, we agreed to wrtie it as a web app.
  • Data Object Creator
This is an application I built just for myself to speed up my consulting work. Smart object-oriented programming separates database access into separate objects from the user-interface. But creating those object classes can be tedious. I wrote this program to generate them. Paste some standard SQL into either SQL Server or MySQL, fill it a bit more info, and click. It produces a complete C# object class, ready to be pasted into a .NET website or application.
  • Synchronized Netbook Application
A client needed to securely take data into the field. I put together a low-cost application with an Access front-end and a SQL Server database back-end. To enhance security, the Access front-end drops all connections to the back-end database when the user exits. It re-establishes the connections with a user-supplied SQL Server database password. When the netbook comes in the office, it makes a wireless connection to the server, and synchronizes data.
  • Mobile/In-House Asset Tracking
A service company needed a paperless way to track dropping off and picking up of rental units. A smartphone application was written to scan barcodes of units when they are put into service or taken out of service in the field. The data is then pushed to an in-house system that tracks each job for billing.
  • Service Tracking
A network and cabling firm needed a way to track customer equipment and enter billable hours in real-time. This system involved using tablet PCs with wireless access to a database-driven .NET intranet application. Customer history, contract tracking, and billings are all provided by the system. The tablet PCs allow customers to sign out equipment with the stylus.
  • State Fair Exhibit Tracking
A major state fair needed an application for tracking exhibits. The web-based system allows authorized persons all over the fair enter and report information, included class entry, show results, calculating premiums, printing 1099s, reporting summary results, and more.
  • Manufacturer Project Tracking
A manufacturer had a home-grown Access database for tracking the progress of design projects. The system proved to be sluggish and unworkable when moved to a corporate wide area network. The system was redesigned into a fully object-oriented .NET web application with data stored in SQL Server. The new system provided security, support for business rules, and data exporting to Excel.
  • Federal No Call Processing
A telemarketer needed to download and process the Federal No Call list against its database of prospects. A MySQL database holds the no call list. A combination of SQL commands and ASP programming processes the list in less than 1 hour per month.
  • Point-of-Sale Retail
This project involved creating a point-of-sale system for a jewelry store. The system integrated receipt printers, bar code printers, bar code scanners, and digital cameras.
  • Auto Body Mobile Quote
This system created a combination PDA and PC-desktop application for creating auto body repair quotes. Programming in the PDA created the quotes in real-time, which were later uploaded to the PC for access and reporting across a network.
  • Book Publishing
This SQL Server-driven client-server application was created to track books through the publishing process. Elements of the system included lead tracking for salespeople, monitoring of the production process for books in process, sales and management reporting, and automatic posting to a web site where authors can check the status of their books.
  • Soybean Processing
An agribusiness company needed a system to track soybean processing from farmer delivery to processing into bags to the sale of those bags.
